2011 Starbucks Logo Redesign

In 2011 Starbucks celebrated their 40th anniversary. Everywhere you go there is a Starbucks Coffee. Siren, the twin-tailed mermaid is the logo and face of Starbucks today. They have evolved with a few different logos in the past 40 years. The new logo is exactly the same only the text "Starbucks Coffee" is not around Siren. People have mixed feelings about this logo redesign. Many people do not like it because when they took away the text they also took away the circle frame defining the logo. On the other hand it is now simplified, a logo with no text. It is a logo that when seen does not need text to tell you the brand. Although, Siren has nothing to do with coffee and if you didn't know Starbucks you would have no idea what this logo was for. As you can see the differences but as a designer I love the simplicity.

Newspaper Thumbnails and Rough Draft

These are the 8 rough drafts I sketched for a Newspaper ad. I chose to promote a Grand Opening for Dizen, a store I designed last year for my Visual Merchandising final.

This is my final sketch. I liked the idea of making the background argyle because it is in style right now. I want to use a reverse in this project also, so I was thinking about making the background black and the text white. I want the font to be the grabbing piece.

Newspaper Ad Specs

Black and White Only
Budget $197
.125 Margins minimum
No Bleeds

Have a Call to Action ex) coupon, sale
Enhance brightness on contrast  - white more white and darks darker

Columns = Inches
1              1.83
2              3.79
3              5.75
4              7.71
5              9.67
6              11.63

Cost = 6 columns x 8inches = 48 col/in
48 col/in x $4 = $192 total ad price
InDesign = 11.63in x 8in
This is the biggest ad I could make within my budget of $197

Direct Mail Final File

This is my final file. I took some of the advices during critique day and changed my images into more of a photo block for a better presentation. I also changed the colors on the back side to more of fall color to make more of an impact on the October specials.

As mentioned in the previous blog I have a Master Image List to complete by the end of the semester. With this Direct Mail project I used a vector, raster - full bleed and raster -4/color. Each photo was set in CMYK and re-sized before being placed into the photo block. The vector is the boarder on the back side around the text "Ask about our October special packages!" This is a line I created in Illustrator with a brush then sized and placed into InDesign.
